MY OPINION
For people who are regular readers of my blog, it’s no secret I have pretty bad dark circles and I am always on the hunt for a high-coverage, non-creasing concealer.  A while back on my trip to Netherlands, I came upon the Sephora outlet, which was shutting down and had everything on clearance for 40% off. I would say the best deal imaginable. They had a lot of high-end brands, one of them being Benefit. There wasn’t Bobbi Brown or I would have definitely picked their concealer/corrector.

I was left to choose between Benefit Erase Paste and Fake Up Concealer. I had heard about the crease stories of Erase Paste and with the recent hype of Fake Up with its launch events all over the world I decided to go with it. Unfortunately, I knew about its hype but I had never read enough reviews or could do a quick Google search there otherwise I would have known this concealer was not for me.

I have to admit this is the prettiest concealer I have seen in terms of packaging. Just look at it, a silver and pink shiny tube, it’s just like shiny toys little kids fight for. The concept of the concealer is pretty novel too. There is a concealing core surrounded by a hydrating outer ring. When you apply it on your under eyes or blemishes it moisturises and conceals. It’s just like mixing your concealer and moisturiser together. The downsides are, one, it hydrates more than it conceals, and two, as with our regular moisturiser, the concealer gets absorbed into the skin

It also gives very sheer coverage. As you can see in my swatches below, it’s almost the shade of my arm, and in the eye swatches it barely covers, you can still see the upper shadows around my eyes. It also doesn’t set well.  Even after setting, the eye area stays shiny and I can feel the stickiness. Not good for combination-oily skins at all! Moreover, after an hour or two the concealer completely fades. I also think the concealer won’t do a good job in covering blemishes/spots as well. Not to forget there are only three shades, 01 Light is too light for me, 02 Medium is a little dark for my under eye area.

This concealer might prove great for people with very dry eye area but who require sheer coverage.

I was at least lucky enough to not to purchase this concealer on full price, even though €17 isn’t too cheap either, but still, this concealer is totally useless and for €29 I could have spent months mourning.

The only use I have put this to is applying it over Rimmel Match Perfection Concealer in Classic Beige, which alone leaves a grayish cast, but if applied as a base and topped with Benefit Fake Up in Medium 02, the grayish-ness is counteracted with the yellowness of Fake Up and both together give me medium coverage and do not fade for a long time. And that way I can then benefit with Fake Up’s hydrating and brightening properties too.

RATING

I have to give Benefit for the concept and packaging but the concealer itself is pretty useless for me!

  8. Ohh crap.. That sucks! My shade is light beige in rimmels match perfection, doesnt leave a grey cast, try changing your shade with e rimmel one. Maybe that will help!

  23. I'm guessing too much moisturizer ratio in the product, why don't they place the core with moisturizer instead? perhaps that would give more coverage. Thanks for this informative review Shang :)

    1. Yes you are right and decrease its size too. That way maybe it would have worked better. :)

  29. The packaging is divine but such a shame it doesn't deliver. I've not heard many good things about this one to be honest so it'l definitely be a miss for me!

  30. aww, sorry to hear that this doesn't work for you but I guess the packaging and concept is quite nice except it just don't work :\

  31. I can totally see this not working well on oily/combination skin because I agree it's a bit tacky and sticky even after you set it. I can imagine how uncomfortable that'll be! I have super dry skin, even under my eyes so maybe that's why my skin took it on so well! I think I'm going to give it another test before I decide really need it! So glad you got on a sale though. I can imagine how gutted I would be to buy something full price and then not love it. Thank you so much for sending me to this review! :)
